Women Make it Happen at Honda Classic

Attracting businesswomen to the game of golf is reaching new heights. While EWGA turns 21 in 2012, many other organizations are now just coming of age and realizing the importance of the female business professional and the clout they bring to the golf marketplace. Yesterday, the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic hosted its inaugural Executive Women’s Day in our backyard and the turnout was fabulous.

Over 200 women from the Palm Beach County area had the opportunity to experience a tournament in action as well as a back stage tour. The networking and relationship building opportunities were plentiful. Along with the outreach designed to make the idea of coming to a golf tournament less intimidating and using it as a business building opportunity; insights were gleaned from a panel of local and national female business success stories including LPGA golf legend, Annika Sorenstam.  The day concluded with a “Wine Down – Network Up” session” followed by a golf exhibition from Michelle McGann, a former LPGA Standout and local resident along with a Get Golf Ready  instructional opportunity from female PGA and LPGA Teaching Professionals from the area.

From my perspective, these one day experiences (which the PGA TOUR is hosting at several tournaments around the country)provide a special venue to get business women connected with the sport and  the business of golf coupled with the opportunity to entice them with the right invitation on learning how to play the game. Having a EWGA presence is paramount to extending the right invitation to these successful, professional women! It’s the logical next step to grow this great game. EWGA is in 125 major markets coast-to-coast offering a broad range of activities for women to connect, learn, play and belong all year long. Collaborating in engaging more women in this sport is what is needed! Thank you Honda Classic!

Susan G. Komen and Rally for the Cure

Fellow EWGA members,

We appreciate and have heard of your comments on current issues surrounding the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and we respect each voice. We wanted to take a moment to clarify our position to all of you.

It is important to note that neither the EWGA nor the EWGA Foundation is a direct financial supporter of the SGK Foundation, nor are we directly affiliated with them.  As many of our chapter leaders know, we have encouraged members and chapters to run or support Rally for the Cure® events, in conjunction with an event already on their calendar.  We have done so as an outreach of our vision statement: to enrich the lives of women through the game of golf.  Rally for the Cure® is a division of Condé Nast.

We do not, and will not, require any chapter to host an event which directly or indirectly supports the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  We have, in response to your requests, asked Rally for the Cure to provide answers and support to each chapter that might have questions regarding future events, and funds raised from those events.  In return, they are currently outreaching to each Rally Ambassador to share pertinent information, and have dedicated a Komen staffer to any questions that Rally Ambassadors may have.  That person is Margo Lucero, VP of Corporate Relations, and we are happy to share her email address with any of our chapters to provide answers and additional support.

In addition, Rally for the Cure has issued the following statement, “We are pleased that there has been a resolution to the recent controversy surrounding Susan G. Komen. Rally for the Cure remains committed to our mission, which is to educate women about the importance of early detection. We value the work our Ambassadors do in support of our goal and encourage them to call us with any additional questions.”

We have watched the debate carefully, and believe that the Susan G. Komen Foundation must continue to focus on their passion for saving lives and finding a cure, first.  We will respect each chapter’s decision regarding hosting Rally for the Cure events, knowing that the corporate headquarters of the EWGA gives full authority for event planning to the local board and committee leaders.

We support our members and families that have been touched by breast cancer, and believe awareness, early detection, and support among women will help us win the battle against this terrible disease.
